Slack Wax Vs Paraffin Wax
Slack wax is a petroleum paraffin wax with an oil content of between 3 and 50%. While fully refined paraffin wax has had nearly all of the oil refined out of it. The oil content of fully refined paraffin is generally less than 0.5%.
Crude paraffin with higher oil content than paraffin wax has lower tensile strength, and its structure is softer and fragile. Thus the quality of slack wax is poorer than that of fully refined paraffin with the same melting point.
For making paraffin wax, we usually remove the oil (de-oiling or de-waxing) from the crude scale wax. The oil is separated by crystallization. Most commonly, the slack wax is heated, mixed with one or more solvents such as a ketone and then cooled. As it cools, wax crystallizes out of the solution, leaving only oil.
